Applications for Garr Tool

Garr Tool’s solid carbide drill lineup is well-suited for high-volume manufacturing lines that require efficient drilling across a wide variety of materials.

By combining wear-resistant coatings, through-coolant capability, and polished flutes, these drills help suppress tool wear and chip clogging—contributing to lower cost per hole. The use of BALINIT® MAYURA coating for aluminum and BALIQ® ALTINOS coating for difficult-to-machine materials enables high-feed machining while protecting the cutting edge, ensuring both long tool life and excellent hole quality.

Garr Tool offers a unified solution for everything from high-speed aluminum drilling to tough materials like Inconel and titanium. This allows for easier standardization of cutting conditions and more efficient tool setup changes.

※Results may vary depending on machining conditions such as spindle speed, feed rate, coolant, and machine rigidity.

How to Choose Garr Tool Carbide Drills

Soft Materials

Recommended: 1160 Series

If you machine aluminum, copper, brass, plastics, or other soft materials under 40 HRC, the 1160 Series is designed for fast, stable drilling.

Its self-centering tip helps eliminate spot drilling, while the three-flute design supports higher feed rates. This helps reduce preprocessing and shorten machining time in mass production.

The BALINIT® MAYURA coating helps prevent chip adhesion and supports smooth chip evacuation, especially in high-speed or live-tooling applications.

Best Suited For

  • Aluminum alloys
  • Copper, brass, and other non-ferrous metals
  • Plastics and resin-based materials
  • Zinc and magnesium alloys
  • Soft metals under 40 HRC
  • Live-tooling applications on lathes
  • Operations where spot drilling should be reduced

Available Lineup

  • Ø3.97 mm (#22, 5/32")–Ø4.85 mm (#11), approx. 0.156–0.191"
  • Ø4.91 mm (#10)–Ø6.53 mm (#F), approx. 0.193–0.257"
  • Ø6.63 mm (#G)–Ø9.12 mm (23/64"), approx. 0.261–0.359"
  • Ø9.34 mm (#U)–Ø13.00 mm (13/32"), approx. 0.368–0.512"
  • Ø13.09 mm (33/64")–Ø16.00 mm (39/64"–5/8"), approx. 0.515–0.630"

Precision Deep Holes

Recommended: HTD12 Series

If your application requires accurate deep holes up to 12×D, the HTD12 Series is designed for straightness, roundness, and positional accuracy.

Its double-margin structure helps reduce hole deviation, while through-coolant and polished flutes improve chip evacuation and surface quality. The H7 tolerance supports high-precision holemaking.

This series is suitable for cooling holes, jig holes, and other applications where reaming may need to be reduced or eliminated.

Best Suited For

  • Deep-hole drilling up to 12×D
  • Cooling holes
  • Jig holes
  • High-nickel alloys
  • Heat-resistant alloys
  • Cobalt-based alloys
  • Stainless steel
  • Tool steel up to 52 HRC

Available Lineup

  • Ø3.00 mm (#40)–Ø5.56 mm (7/32"), approx. 0.118–0.219"
  • Ø5.60 mm–Ø10.00 mm, approx. 0.220–0.394"
  • Ø10.10 mm–Ø12.00 mm, approx. 0.398–0.472"

Hard Materials

Recommended: 1250H Series

If you drill hard-to-machine materials over 40 HRC, the 1250H Series is designed for stable drilling in high-nickel alloys, heat-resistant alloys, stainless steel, and tool steel.

The BALIQ® ALTINOS coating helps protect the cutting edge from heat, while the two-flute design and 30° helix support efficient chip evacuation.

These features help control heat buildup, reduce the risk of sudden tool failure, and support deep-hole drilling up to 5×D in difficult materials.

Best Suited For

  • Hard materials over 40 HRC
  • High-nickel alloys
  • Heat-resistant alloys
  • Cobalt-based alloys
  • Stainless steel
  • Tool steel
  • Deep-hole drilling up to 5×D

Available Lineup

  • Ø0.79 mm (1/32")–Ø1.19 mm (3/64"), approx. 0.031–0.047"
  • Ø1.20 mm–Ø2.15 mm (#55–#48), approx. 0.047–0.085"
  • Ø2.18 mm–Ø3.18 mm (#44–1/8"), approx. 0.086–0.125"

After-Sales Support from Garr Tool

Garr Tool offers a regrinding service to restore the performance of used solid carbide drills.

To use the service, simply send the tools to Garr Tool. After inspection, you’ll receive a quote for approval. Regrinding will begin only after the customer confirms the estimate.

Note that not all tools are eligible for regrinding or recoating. For example, solid carbide drills smaller than 5/32" (approx. 3.97 mm) cannot be reground, and drills with plugged coolant holes cannot be recoated. Please confirm eligibility before using the service.
